Urban Fox to power up communities in Kent with new EV charge points

Urban Fox, a partnership between Balfour Beatty Investments and Urban Electric Networks, has secured a 20-year contract with Kent County Council to deploy a large-scale programme of on-street electric vehicle chargers across Kent.

Forming part of Kent County Council’s strategy to modernise transport and support innovation across Kent, Urban Fox will install up to 10,000 on-street chargepoints as part of the programme, focusing on locations with limited off-street parking.

Urban Fox will work closely with Kent County Council, district and borough councils to ensure charge points are delivered in the right locations, using a range of on-street solutions designed to fit sensitively into residential environments.

Urban Fox was established to address the growing need for accessible and innovative EV charging infrastructure, combining Urban Electric Networks’ innovative and entrepreneurial spirit with Balfour Beatty’s unmatched scale, skill and capability in financing and delivering infrastructure in the heart of local communities.

Ion Appuhamy, Managing Director of Balfour Beatty Investments said: “We are delighted to partner with Kent County Council to deliver cutting-edge electric vehicle charging infrastructure that meets the needs of local communities. This collaboration reflects our shared commitment to creating a cleaner, greener future by making EV charging accessible and convenient for everyone. By working together, we are helping to accelerate the transition to sustainable transport and supporting Kent’s ambition to lead the way in low-carbon mobility."

Oli Freeling-Wilkinson, CEO for Urban Fox, said: “This programme represents a significant step forward for EV charging in Kent. Being awarded the contract to deliver up to 10,000 charging sockets is a clear vote of confidence in Urban Fox’s ability to deliver at scale while keeping communities at the heart of every project.”

Peter Osborne, Cabinet Member for Highways at Kent County Council said: “We’re pleased to support this programme because it offers practical help for residents and prepares Kent for the future. It will deliver reliable and affordable charging within walking distance of their homes, which is particularly important for people who do not have off-road parking – and it’s being delivered at no extra cost to Kent’s Council Tax payers.

Residents have already shared over 700 places in their local communities where they would like to see EV chargers and we’ll be assessing each of them over the coming months as the roll-out begins.”

At a launch event held today, Stoner Motor Company Medway Hyundai, provided the new Hyundai INSTER - an innovative fully electric vehicle that showcases the next generation of compact EV design – to support Urban Fox and Kent County Council in marking this important milestone.

Residents can continue to nominate their street for public chargers using an interactive map on KCC’s website: https://letstalk.kent.gov.uk/on-street-ev.
